How to Care for a Hand-Painted Festival Hat

A hand-painted hat is a piece of wearable art — treat it a little differently from a mass-produced cap and it'll last for years of festivals. Here's how to keep yours looking (and glowing) its best.

Cleaning

Spot-clean only. Use a slightly damp cloth to gently lift dust and playa dust off the surface — never soak or machine-wash a painted hat, as water and agitation can dull hand-painted detail. For felt, a soft brush restores the nap.

Protecting the paint

Sealed paint is durable, but avoid scraping the painted surface against rough bags or surfaces. Store it so nothing presses directly on the design.

Keeping the glow vivid

UV-reactive color stays bright when it's clean — dust is the enemy of glow. A gentle wipe before a night out keeps the colors electric under blacklight.

Storing & shaping

Store your hat upright or on a shelf, out of direct long-term sunlight (constant UV exposure can fade any pigment over years). Stuff the crown lightly with tissue to hold its shape between wears.
